The 92nd anniversary of the Republic of Estonia was celebrated on February 24, 2010. The University of Tartu honoured it by organising various events at the University of Latvia.

It was the first time the University of Tartu delegation celebrated Estonian Independence Day abroad. Svetlana Vogel, representative of the International Relations Office at the University of Tartu, explained that the anniversary provided a great opportunity to strengthen the friendship with a very good and close collaboration partner - the University of Latvia. She also pointed out that the experience might introduce a new tradition of celebrating such anniversaries together. First in the range of events was an exhibition providing its visitors with comprehensive information about Estonia, Tartu, the University of Tartu and the opportunities it offers for international student exchange. The handouts were available also in the Latvian language. There are approximately 17,000 students at the University of Tartu; 670 of them are international students and 20 are from Latvia. S. Vogel acknowledged that international students are most interested in doctoral studies as all the study programmes on this level are available in English. However, there are also one bachelor level and six master level study programmes that are available in English. The Estonians held a concert by the artists of Viljandi Culture Academy. It was followed by a film “The Singing Revolution” that told the story of the Estonian people regaining their freedom in the 90’s. Everyone was also welcome to the lectures about European and national youth policy and the Baltic countries before and after the crisis.
