Female choir "Minjona"
The female choir of the University of Latvia „Minjona” has been founded in 1975. The name of the choir is derived from the song by Emils Dārziņš "Minjona” with Goethe words, which is regarded as the anthem of the choir. The song tells the story about a dream land that our yearnings and thoughts turn to.
Since 1990 the art director and conductor of the choir „Minjona” is Romāns Vanags, since 1999 the choir master is Evija Vanaga, but since 2003 the second choir master is Elīna Auziņa. The long term choir master of the choir is Ilze Dzērve.
“Minjona” regularly participates in Latvian Nationwide Song and Dance Celebrations, where in 2003 and 2008 the choir participated in the so called “Song Wars” ; Students’ Song celebrations of Baltic States, which took place in Riga (Latvia), Vilnius (Lithuania) and Tartu (Estonia) – 1988; 1991; 1994; 1999 and 2004.
The choir "Minjona" has participated in many international competitions and festivals, acquired several high-commended prizes and appreciations by listeners.
