Male choir "Dziedonis"
Men's Choir, of the University of Latvia „DZIEDONIS” has been founded in 1924. The collaboration of the choir with the University of Latvia resumed in 1990, when the men’s choir “Dziedonis” became the choir of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, University of Latvia.
The activities of the choir have mainly been based on music interpretations made by Latvians, from Jānis Cimze to Jānis Lūsēns, composers of Western European origin and Russian classics. The repertoire of choir includes 544 original songs in 21 languages, cantatas of folk song arrangements, oratories, choral opera, spiritual choral music. In choral competitions from 1948 until 1993 Dziedonis has obtained 11 prize-winning places.
The choir has won as well awards of numerous international choir competitions and festivals (the most important - triple win – in polyphonic tunes, folk songs and overall performance – in the international choir contest in Gorizia in 1977). The choir has recorded 61 soundtracks in sound boards and CD.
From 2003 the choir is led by Roberts Liepiņš, conductor Kaspars Freimanis, Raimonds Počs.
