Karlis Verdins’ book “The Social and Political Dimensions of the Latvian Prose Poem” will be presented at the new exhibition “Discover the Network of Excellence “CLIOHRES.net” Publications” on Friday, 5th November, 2010 at 17.00, UL, Faculty of Humanities Library (4a Visvalza Street, first floor).

Karlis Verdins’ doctoral thesis “The Latvian Prose Poem in the 20th Century” presented in 2009 forms the background of the book. Its English edition investigates the history of Latvian prose poem from the 1870s to the early 21st century, analysing writers’ attitude towards social and political processes and outlining significant events and problems of each historical period. Moreover, a new set of Latvian prose poem samples in Latvian and English are included in the volume.

The publishing house of the University of Pisa, Italy, published an English edition of Karlis Verdins’ monograph “The Social and Political Dimensions of the Latvian Prose Poem”. The book publishing was funded by the European Commission - Sixth Framework Programme Network of Excellence “CLIOHRES.net” in the doctoral thesis publications series; Karlis Verdins’ work is the only one from Latvia among publications from 11 European universities. The “CLIOHRES.net” Network of Excellence unites 45 universities, and UL is represented by the thematic work group “Power and Culture”, where UL leading researchers and PhD students work under the guidance of Professor Ausma Cimdina.

Doctor Pieter François represents “Power and Culture” at Ghent University, and his study investigates intercultural vision and stereotypes in the context of Belgian-British relations. The research is also published by the University of Pisa in the doctoral thesis publications series.

Both authors Karlis Verdins and Pieter François, Indrikis Muiznieks, UL Professor and Pro-Rector for Research, Ausma Cimdina, Professor, the leader of “Power and Culture” of the Sixth Framework Programme Network of Excellence “CLIOHRES.net”, Ojars Lams, the senior researcher of the Network, as well as other project participants will take part in this event.

From 5 November till 30 November, all who are interested in getting more information about the works published within the programme and included in the Library’s collection are welcome to the exhibition “Discover the Network of Excellence “CLIOHRES.net” Publications” at UL, Faculty of Humanities Library.
