On Sunday, September 6th at 18:00, the festival will include an opening ceremony in Dome Square, followed in the evening by an entertaining session of musical surprises in the university's main hall. This year will mark the 43rd time this event has been held. The aim of the event, organised by the Student Union, is to enable the new intake of students to start their new university life together and to become acquainted both with their fellow students and with the management and administration of the university.
The event will be held one day before the official first day of studies, September 6th. They will be welcomed by the Rector of the university, Mārcis Auziņš; the Minister of Education and Science, Tatjana Koķe; the Chairperson of the Education, Culture and Sports Committee of Riga City Council, Eiženija Aldermane; the faculty deans; Aristotle himself; older students; and members of the student associations. The State President, Valdis Zatlers, has also been invited.
The university choir "Juventus" and the folk dance group "Dancis" will entertain those students gathered in the square. After the ceremony, the students will head off on a torch-lit procession from Dome Square through the Old Town's streets to the university.
In honour of the university's 90th anniversary this year the party will, after a break of 30 years, take place at 'home', in the university's Main Hall at 19 Raiņa Boulevard. The event's special guest will be one of the founders of Latvian hip hop culture - Gustavo.
