Premieres of Riga Summer School 2012 Films

World premieres of short films about Riga identity, made by foreign students during the Riga Summer School 2012, will take place on Thursday, August 16.
During the two summer school weeks students from 9 countries worked on films about the following neighborhoods in Riga – Teika, Miera street, Moscow suburb, Sarkandaugava and Bolderaja.
Everyone is welcome to the premieres at the University of Latvia’s Faculty of Social Sciences (LU SZF), especially people who live or work in the mentioned neighborhoods. Riga Summer School closing event on Thursday will begin at 19:00 in the Jesajah Berlin auditorium on Lomonosova street 1 in Riga.
Stories filmed in two weeks will reveal the different faces of Riga, for instance, the diversity of people of Riga, history of various places, destinies of people, as well as dreams and hopes of Rigans. The stories are captured on film by students from Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Italy, Georgia and Colombia.
The participants of the Riga Summer School 2012 represent various areas of studies but they all share their interest in film. During the summer school they had lectures by professor Inta Brikse, professor Viktors Freibergs, lecturer Dmitrijs Petrenko and Latvian National Television journalist Lilita Eglite, as well as practical workshops under the leadership of film professionals Dmitrijs Scegolevs and Peteris Sudakovs. Students also created their films about some Riga neighborhood under their supervision. At the closing event a jury of professional journalists and filmmakers will judge the films.
Last year’s Riga Summer School films about Purvciems, Agenskalns, Old Town, Embankment of Daugava and the Center of Riga, as well as this year’s Riga Summer School teaser animation can be viewed at the summer school’s channel on YouTube.
Already for the second year in a row the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Latvia’s Faculty of Social Sciences organizes the Riga Summer School. It is supported by Live Riga and Laima.
