The Annual Awards of the University of Latvia have been presented

On 1 February in the Great Hall of the Universisty of Latvia (UL), a staff meeting has been held, at which the rector, Professor Mārcis Auziņš gave a speech to the university staff, and the UL Annual Awards, which are presented each academic year, were distributed.

Students will dispute before the International Court of Justice

The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition Baltic Cup 2013 will take place in the University of Latvia’s Faculty of Law on February 15th and 16th. This year the Faculty of Law will welcome participants from Belarus, Sweden, Finland and Luxemburg that will be judged by former moot court participants and other experts of international public law.

The building of UL Library is reborn in a new form

On January 28 in Riga, 4 Kalpaka Blvd., there was an official opening ceremony of the renovated historical building of the UL Library in which from now on the new L. W. Kerkovius's House: Humanities and Social Sciences Research Centre and Library, will function.

Professor A. Ambainis is awarded a prestigious ‘Advanced Grant’

On January 22, 2013 the European Commission announced 302 top researchers who are awarded a prestigious ‘Advanced Grant’ by the European Research Council (ERC). For the first time this grant is also awarded to a Latvian researcher – Professor Andris Ambainis from the University of Latvia, Faculty of Computing (advantages and limits of quantum devices).

A group of geographers from the University of Latvia (UL) in cooperation with Latvian social networking site draugiem.lv has developed an innovative research tool, which in 2010 and 2012 allowed them to implement a web-based survey of Latvian residents living abroad. The goal of research was to evaluate the main mobility trends by making use of the social networking site draugiem.lv.

Spring Intake 2013: Call for applications

University of Latvia’s Faculty of Medicine invites prospective students to submit applications for studies at the Higher professional study programme “MEDICINE”. This is the only programme offered for the Spring 2013 intake at the University. International symposium "Coming to terms with the traumatic experience of the 1940s in the Baltic States"

Ever since 1991, the history of the 1940s (WWII, Stalinist deportations, Holocaust, emigration) has been the centerpiece of the social memory of the Baltic States. And memory politics has largely evolved around this decade. Yet social changes beginning in the 1990s onwards have gradually transformed the social memory of this traumatic/heroic past.

On September 20, the UL Foundation and the construction company RE&RE signed a reciprocal agreement on supporting a large- scale UL Project which includes establishing a test site for specially constructed buildings at the UL Botanical Garden.

"The object of the month" – a student’s crib from the 19th century

In September, a month of knowledge, every student and visitor of the University of Latvia (UL) has a chance to see the unique student’s crib of the 19th century, from the Museum of History collection. It is being shown within "The object of the month" campaign. The crib is exhibited at the University main building, Raiņa Boulevard 19, in the central lobby as well as on the UL webpage.

Newly created University of Latvia's application for mobile devices available for students

With the start of the new study year, the University of Latvia's application for mobile devices is created for the convenience of UL students. The application is available for free download to anyone interested, but the current version is targeted at active UL students. They can use the new application to access study data, to view the lecture time-table and the contact section, etc.
