Four BAFF Scolarships For Practice and Research in the USA

The end of 2011 was the deadline for the third BAFF (Baltic-American Freedom Foundation) scolarship contest. Four of the UL researchers and students received the scolarships and will go to the U.S. in spring and summer.

The 70th Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia

UL Footballers Triumph in the 1st Division

On Sunday, 30 th October, Latvia’s First Division Football League champions were named. They are „FS METTA/ University of Latvia”. Since the beginning of the season they had been striving to win and to qualify for the top level - the Master’s League. During the whole season, the student team’s performance was stable and, for quite a while, they hadn’t lost a single game.

University of Latvia strengthens its cooperation with Baku State University in Azerbaijan

The exhibition “Azerbaijan — Latvia: Historical and Cultural Dialogue” was unveiled in Baku State University, Azerbaijan on 4 October, 2011. Mārcis Auziņš, Professor and Rector of the University of Latvia (UL), also participated at the opening event. The Exhibition was created in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia to Azerbaijan and Baku State University. The Exhibition includes more than 300 exhibits from the funds of the UL Academic Library. A cooperation agreement between the UL and Baku State University was also signed. Moreover, valuable Latvian scientific books were donated to the Scientific Library of Baku State University.

European Centre of Excellence for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Latvia

In the academic year 2011/2012, the Centre for European and Transition Studies at the University of Latvia (UL) is to establish the Centre of Excellence as part of the EU’s Jean Monnet Programme. The Centre was inaugurated on September 26, 2011 at the International Conference “European Integration and Baltic Sea Region: Diversity and Perspectives”. The Jean Monnet Programme forms part of the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme (2007-2013).

A French edition of Andrejs Rauhvargers’ book “Global University Rankings and Their Impact” has been published in Paris. Andrejs Rauhvargers is UL Professor and Secretary General of the Latvian Rectors’ Conference.

Estonian Human Development Report on Baltic States’ Growth Scenarios Presented at the University of Latvia

The Presentation of the Estonian Human Development Report 2010 /2011 “Baltic Way of Human Development Twenty Years On” took place at the University of Latvia (UL) on September 20. At the Presentation, experts from the Baltic Sea region highlighted mutually comparable indicators on the Baltic States’ demographics, education, language policy, social policy, labour market, integration and other areas, revealing the current industry issues in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
