    In the brisk and bright winter morning of the 9th February 2017, Centre of Indian Studies and Culture celebrated the inauguration of its new premises at Baznicas street 5. The event was presided by the Ambassador of India to Sweden and Latvia, H.E. Monika Kapil Mohta, who had arrived from Stockholm. Guests were greeted by Vice-Rector of the University, Ina Druviete and Director of the Centre, Agita Baltgalve. Professor Sigma Ankrava – founder of the Centre and Pro Vice Chancellor of Haridvar Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya Univeristy Dr. Chinmay Pandya participated in a live talk via skype.

    On January 25 to 27 project’s “Living Together with Difficult Memories and Diverse Identities” (LIVINGMEMORIES) partner workshop took place in Tartu, in the University of Tartu. Project is implemented in the program ERA.NET RUS PLUS (EU-FP7). Research groups from the University of Helsinki, which is the leading partner of the project, Perm National Polytechnic University, University of Tartu, Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main, Koç University in Istanbul and University of Latvia participated in the seminar in Tartu. In April 2016 project’s partner meeting on the same scale was organized in the University of Latvia.

    University of Latvia has acquired free of charge license of the web survey software tool QuestionPro for three years. The license obtained through the University Sponsorship Program provides that the tool can be used by students and by academic and administrative staff. Each user of QuestionPro – a student, an employee or department/faculty – obtains his/her own account.

    On November 23, 2016 during the conference “Spreading Excellence and Crossing Innovation Divide” organized by the European Commission in Brussels, the Director-General of DG Research and Innovation Robert-Jan Smits and Commissioner of Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas announced the winners of “WIDESPREAD 1-2014: Teaming” competition. The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) is the only scientific institution in the Baltic Sea region, which was granted support from the European Commission for the Horizon 2020 program “Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation”. 169 submitted proposals were evaluated in a two stage process, and a multinational group of experts selected ten best projects. The project CAMART2 (Excellence Centre of of Advanced Material Research and Technology Transfer) from Latvia was ranked as the 5th best project.

    Every student of the University of Latvia (UL) started their studies with Aristotle celebration. This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the traditional Aristotle’s day – already for the 50th time, on August 31, UL freshmen meet in Dome Square for the ceremony followed by the procession to their Alma Mater. Times have changed, but the tradition continues to live and develop. There is no other Latvian or even Baltic university, celebrating start of the academic year on such a large scale.

    On November 4-5, an important forum is held in Latvia – the New Silk Road "16+1" format summit with participation of 16 prime ministers of Central Europe and Eastern Europe and the prime minister of People’s Republic of China. Simultaneously a symposium for the sinologists of these 16 countries will be organized by the University of Latvia (UL) and the UL Confucius Institute (CI). Furthermore, the guests will be presented with the results of six years of work by Professor Pēteris Pildegovičs, UL Confucius Institute Director – "Latvian-Chinese and Chinese-Latvian Dictionary".     The BALTIC SPACE COAST project of the University of Latvia has been selected by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme to proceed to Step 2 of the project development and selection process by the Monitoring Committee of the Interreg Programme that met in Hämeenlinna on 13 and 14 September 2016. The Monitoring Committee based its choice on the outcome of the quality assessment and joint strategic considerations. The Committee selected 51 organizations from Latvia are involved in 75 projects selected. The Baltic Space Coast project is one of two projects being coordinated by Latvia.

  • University of Latvia rises by 50 places in the prestigious QS World University Rankings
    07.09.2016

    This year, University of Latvia (UL) has risen by 50 places in one of the world’s most prestigious rankings of higher education institutions – QS World University Rankings, and now occupies 651th–700th place, according to the data released September 6. In 2015, UL was ranked 701th–800th. UL is the first and, so far, the only higher education institution in Latvia to be included in the ranking of this level, and the significantly improved position clearly shows that UL firmly stands among the world’s top 5% of universities.

    On Wednesday evening, August 17 the premier of four short documentaries created by students of Riga Summer School 2016 was held at the Goethe Institute in Riga. The atmosphere was creative and the event richly attended. This year seventeen students from China, Nepal, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Latvia were working together on short documentary films. Riga Summer School 2016 is being organized for the sixth time by University of Latvia, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Communication Studies. This year’s topic of the summer school is "Living Together with Difficult Memories and Diverse Identities" or “LIVINGMEMORIES” due to the summer school’s cooperation with identically titled international social science and humanities research project.

    In the evening of August 6 this year Riga Summer School 2016 was opened and it will last for almost two weeks until August 18. Pleasant welcome picnic took place at the Latvian Institute (Pils St. 21, Riga). Riga Summer School is an international program for creating short documentaries and is targeted at journalism, media and film study students from all over the world. Students from China, Nepal, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Latvia have gathered this year to work on a joint project. This year’s topic of the summer school is "Living Together with Difficult Memories and Diverse Identities" or “LIVINGMEMORIES” due to the summer school’s cooperation with identically titled international social science and humanities research project.

    From July 19 to 22, 2016 project “LIVINGMEMORIES” researcher Didzis Bērziņš from University of Latvia, Faculty of Social Sciences took part in the international conference “The Presence of the Holocaust in society, politics and culture”.
