According to the Immigration Law from May 1, 2003 for non citizens of European Union who apply for full time degree studies it is not possible to apply for the visa and residence permit in Latvia anymore.
Thus one should apply for residence permit only in a respective Embassy of Latvia.
The procedure is as follows.
After a positive admission decision of the University of Latvia, university shall prepare an official invitation for a visa application.
For preparing the letter of invitation we should have following data:
- copy of passport;
- student’s date and place of birth;
- citizenship;
- home address;
- Embassy of Latvia where student will apply for residence permit;
- address of accommodation in Riga.
First semester student’s state duty for an invitation approval will be covered from the Registration fee payment.
Please note that the invitation procedure will take more than 30 days, so we should get the requested information as soon as possible.
Applying for residence permit at the Embassy of Latvia an applicant should have valid passport (it should be valid at least 3 months after departing from Latvia) and hand in the following documents:
- residence permit application form;
- copy of the passport;
- 1 photo;
- medical certificate on tuberculosis;
- statement on punishability issued by a competent institution of the citizenship or the host country if a foreigner has resided in that country longer than 12 months (not necessary for a citizen of a state stipulated in the list);
- document confirming the necessary subsistence;
- document which approves the place of accommodation in Latvia;
- copy of the study agreement;
- legalized documents on previous education which should be sufficient for studies at University of Latvia;
- receipt of state duty payment for the examination of submitted documents.
On receiving the residence permit in Foreign Service Centre of Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs a student will have to present the life and health insurance which is valid in Latvia.
