Short Program description

The goal of the doctoral studies programme in sociology at the University of Latvia is to prepare high qualified scientists and teaching staff in sociology. Studies involve various sub-sectors of sociology approved by the official list of scientific sectors and sub-sectors in Latvia: the theory and history of sociology, applied sociology, social anthropology, social policy and the organisation of social work, sociology of culture and mass communications, rural sociology, sociology of organisations and public administration and sociology of politics. The programme supports new research directions in the matters of contemporary social development and facilitates the specialization of doctoral students in the fields of their research interests.

A number of leading Latvian sociologists are involved in the implementation of the programme. Professors involve doctoral students in the research projects both at home and abroad. It gives young researchers an opportunity for specialization and improvement of their competitiveness at international level.

Studies are carried out in accordance with the programme and the individual plans of doctoral students. The main elements of the studies are: the preparation of a dissertation (100 credit points), promotion exams (10 credit points), theoretical courses, a scientific publication, participation in the implementation of the bachelor programme in sociology, individual studies and research. The volume of the studies programme is 144 credit points. Full time studies take three years (6 semesters); par time studies – four years (8 semesters).

There are 15 study slots in the programme, of which 10 are financed by state. There is a Promotional Council for Sociology, Political Sciences and Communication Studies at the University of Latvia. The study programme is accredited for the time period till the December 2016.
