Master's degree study programme "German Philology" is a modern programme developed according to the actual trends in German Linguistics and is conducted in cooperation with the Ventspils University College. It is designed for students with German language proficiency and interest in German speaking countries as the prospective professional or research field. Students gain an in-depth knowledge of German language, literature un culture to be prepared for the professional career. The programme takes great emphasis on cross-cultural discourse, which is consistent with the requirements set by the labor market. Highly-qualified professors, including guest lecturers from Germany and Sweden, ensure an interesting and qualitative study process. The programme also envisages students’ mobility within the framework of Erasmus in the institutions of higher education in European Union. Graduates may continue further studies in a doctoral programme in Latvia or abroad.
Programme courses
Main courses: Paradigmata of Culture Studies, Introduction to Media and Communication Studies, Linguistic Pragmatics, Theory of Language, History of German Philology, Scientific Research Practice etc.
Programme modules
The programme comprises general philology study courses as elective field courses with one of the following specialization: Linguistics, Literary Theory, German Literature, German-Latvian language translations.
Study period and classes time
The full – time degree programme covers two academic years. Classes are three to four times a week in the evenings of working days from 4.30pm till 9.30pm.
Career opportunities
After successful completion of the programme graduates may work in secondary and higher education institutions, research centres, publishing houses and translation offices, government or private institutions in Latvia, Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
Admission requirements
1. Bachelor’s degree in humanities or equivalent second-level higher professional education or certified documents proving education at an institution of higher education;
2. If German is not your native language and/or your previous education is not obtained in German, you must present results of one of the internationally recognized language tests or a minimum grade 6 (almost good) in a 10 point grading system in German in the Bachelor’s degree diploma supplement.
Enrollment criteria (for students competing for the state-financed study place)
1. The grade obtained in final Bachelor’s exam or the average grade obtained in final exams (40%);
2. The grade point average of undergraduate studies (60%).
Please note! Only EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and EU long-term resident status holders can compete for a state-financed study place.
