The principal objective of the Public Relations Department is to create a positive image of the University of Latvia (UL) on the national and international levels. The department aims to ensure public awareness of UL, its opportunities and services, operating principles and instruments, latest achievements and current studies. The Department organizes the work of the local media, informs the national media and carries out projects, campaigns and informative events.

UL holds a very special status - it is the largest higher educational institution in the Baltic States and one of the largest state institutions – therefore, it is not only a necessity for the University  to inform the general public and thus enhance UL development, but also its duty and responsibility towards Latvian and international society.
