The University of Latvia International Relations Department came into existence in the 1970s. With the University of Latvia Senate’s decision in January 1994, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) was established as a permanent administrative unit. Previously DFA functioned as a part of UL Science Department. The International Relations Department was created on the basis of DFA in March 2003.

The principal objective of the International Relations Department is to ensure international cooperation and to coordinate all foreign connections. International cooperation is one of the building blocks for development and institutional strategy. Moreover, it will facilitate the University’s aim to achieve and maintain high standards both in study process and in research activities.

The student exchange has rapidly grown between 1994 and 2002. The International Relations Department informs UL students about their possibilities to study abroad, about the funding opportunities and, if necessary, organises contests for the available scholarships.

UL senior-year students are offered scholarships for studies abroad. Main conditions to be applicable for a scholarship:

  • very good grades during studies and in final exams;
  • very good knowledge of the respective field;
  • future plans in the respective field;
  • good foreign language skills.

But bear in mind that exchange programme scholarships are not intended for obtaining an academic degree in a higher educational institution abroad. A SOCRATES/ERASMUS scholarship is awarded only once in a lifetime.

In every faculty there is a contact person responsible for coordinating international cooperation.
