The Centre was established in 2006, in order to promote Russian studies within different fields of humanities (folkloristics, traditional culture, literary studies, linguistics, arts studies, etc.), to integrate academic efforts by researchers in Russian studies in Latvia, Russia and Europe, and to establish in Latvia a Russian Studies Centre of international standards. The Centre is a structural unit of the Department of Slavic Studies, Faculty or Philology and Arts, and organises and coordinates research, studies and activities required for the advancement of philology and culturology disciplines.
The purpose of the Centre is to carry out interdisciplinary, up-to-date and high quality research in the field of Russian studies, in culturology and philology; to integrate the research findings in academic education and to raise public awareness thereof. The Centre performs diverse studies of the Russian language and literature under the diaspora conditions, probes into specific (folklore-related, literary, linguistic, etc.) and general cultural contacts both of domestic and of exterritorial character (Latvia-Baltics-Russia-Europe).
