The purpose of the study and research centre is to promote research in Lithuanistics and Baltistics, and to expand the co-operation between Baltic scholars from Latvia and Lithuania.
The initiative of setting up the centre dates back to 1998, when the Vytautas Magnus University of Kaunas held a conference "Latvia and Lithuania in the 20th Century".
The centre operates in several directions: the organisation of conferences, the work within editorial boards for joint Baltic region publications, the organisations of field expeditions, the gathering and processing of their material, the coordination of Lithuanian studies in universities of Latvia, the organisation of presentation events related to Lithuania and of excursions. The centre intends to collect data on the language, ethnic culture and history of Lithuanians residing in Latvia, to compile information on research papers in the field of comparative studies in Lettonica and Lithuanica, to promote teaching of Lithuanistica disciplines - language, literature, folklore, ethnography, mythology, ethnomusicology and history - to Latvian students.
