The cabinet established in 2004 is a centre for addressing research issues in dialectology and toponymics, and in Latgalian studies. Its function is the organisation of expeditions, the collection and processing of materials, the production of textbooks and reference literature, studies and publication of the scholarly legacy of Latvian dialectologists, discussions on problem cases in the functioning of placenames. Vectors of activity: Latvian dialectology as a subject for research and studies; issues of transposition and functioning of toponyms; Latvian dialects in Latvia and abroad; the Latgalian language and heritage of Latgale. Innovative directions: research in the written Latgalian language; research work and cultural and educational activities for Latvians in the East. The cabinet prepares for publication research articles and education literature, organizes conferences and other events; it communicates with institutions and colleagues in the discipline, with schools and other education and cultural institutions.
