Because student interest in exchange programmes abroad has increased year by year, we plan to increase the number of our partner universities so as to offer students an even greater choice.  During the spring of 2009, we signed new partnership agreements with the University of Szeged in Hungary, the University of Olsztyn in Poland, the University of Florence in Italy, and the University of Madrid in Spain.

The Erasmus programme also ensures very successful mobility among faculty members, allowing instructors from our faculty to go on exchange trips and teach classes at universities in other countries.  It also allows us to attract guest professors from other countries for various courses at our university.

The Faculty of Law has worked for years with guest lectors under the auspices of DAAD programme, as well.  During the spring semester of 2009, there were two guest professors who continued to teach classes at the University of Latvia – Thomas Schmitz, who specialises in European Union law, and Katrina Ertle, who taught a class in legal terminology in Germany.  During the 2009/2010 academic year, she has been replaced with DAAD guest lector Till Dembeck, who will teach the same course.

The Faculty of Law has also developed partnerships with foreign universities and guest lectors under the auspices of other programmes.  During the spring semester of 2008, for instance, a guest professor from the United States, Jānis Šulmeisters, taught a class on international maritime law under the auspices of the Fulbright programme.

The Faculty of Law is regularly visited by foreign students, instructors and professionals who are interested in legal studies, laws and legal training in Latvia.

The Faculty of Law has worked successfully with many state and private institutions, allowing students to strengthen their theoretical knowledge in practice.  The Faculty of Law ensures internships at all levels of Latvia’s courts, as well as the Constitutional Court, the Prosecutor-General’s Office, the National Police, Parliament, national governance institutions, and local governments.  Students can also have internships in the offices of sworn attorneys, sworn notaries and court bailiffs, as well as at relevant public organisations.
