The UL started to prepare academically educated philosophers in 1919. Soon after the occupation of Latvia in 1940, the Department of Philosophy was closed.

The Department of Methodology and Logic (chairman Prof. V. Ņikiforovs), along with three other units, started to work within the Faculty of History and Philosophy in 1991. After the restoration of Latvian independence, it was renamed to its present name.

The research activities of the Department cover the following main areas: logic, epistemology, philosophy of consciousness, philosophy of science, cognitive semantics and linguistic philosophy. These themes are covered in lectures of Philosophy study programme. Scientists of the Department are participating in various research projects, for example within the UL Centre for the Cognitive Sciences and Semantics. For many years, the Department’s researchers have published textbooks, monographs and scientific articles, such as Acta Universitatis Latviensis: Philosophy.

The Department collaborates with colleagues from the University of Oxford, University of Bremen, University of Edinburgh, etc. Annual conferences on Philosophy and Cognitive Science may be considered the Department’s tradition.
