The Department of Medieval History functions under this name since 2008. Research work, study courses and course papers, Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Theses cover the period from late Antiquity (3rd – 4th century) till the beginning of Modern history (16th - first half of 17th century). Since 2008, if there are enough students who wish to immatriculate, the Department has offered a study module in Medieval and Early Modern History within the Master's program.

Main areas of the Department research activities

Research interests of the Department staff members are mainly related to the history of Livonia and the Baltic Sea region from the 13th to the 16th century, and such themes as:

  • Viking age in the Baltic Sea region
  • Eastern Baltics before the Crusades
  • The Crusades in the Baltic Sea region in the 13th century
  • Cities of Livonia in the Middle Ages
  • Hanza in Livonia
  • Political history of Livonia at the end of the Middle Ages
  • Livonia during the transition period from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age
  • Political history of Northern Germany in the 16th century
  • Historiography of the history of Latvian Middle Ages
  • Archaeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Age

Collaboration with Latvian and foreign institutions and research centres

Taking into account that there is no institution in Latvia that specializes in the Medieval History, the Department’s main partners are abroad. Traditionally there is a close collaboration with colleagues from Germany, particularly from the University of Greifswald, Rostock, and Free University of Berlin.
