The Chair of Archaeology and Auxiliary Disciplines of History was founded in 1991, and since then, it offers a specialization in Cultural heritage within the Bachelor’s degree programme in History (director Asoc.prof. A.Gavriļins). But since 2008, this specialization is also included in a Master’s degree programme.
The Chair’s activities cover five main areas:
- Archaeology
- Ancient history
- Cultural monuments and its protection
- Cultural heritage preservation and protection, museology
- Auxiliary disciplines of history
The Chair collaborates with the UL Institute of History of Latvia, National Latvian Museum of History, Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, State Inspection for Heritage Protection of Latvia, Ventspils Museum, Latvian Association of Archaeologists, as well as with the State Heraldry Commission, Latvian Museums Association, Latvian National Commission for UNESCO, and others.
