The University of Latvia herbarium is closely associated with the Chair, and wealthy plant collections are used in teaching and research in systematics and ecology.

The main research directions of the Chair staff are:

• Natural forest development and biological diversity
• Impact of climatic factors on growth of trees and shrubs
• Ecosystem function at a landscape level
• Development of identification keys Latvia’s plant
• Coastal habitat and species ecology, protection and management

Education and research is associated with Institute of Biology and the Latvian Nature Fund. Student exchange is possible through a NORDPLUS network between 7 Nordic Europe Universities and ERASMUS exchange contracts.
