Discipline: European Economic Integration
Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Latvia was launched in 2003/2004 academic year for the first time in Latvia. The overall goal of the Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Latvia is to respond to the challenges and effects of European Economic Integration and the European Union Enlargement. It also provides a research forum for exchange of ideas and knowledge in accordance with the courses taught and selected topics of major development trends in international and European economic affairs.
The Chair serves as a place for interdisciplinary approach for teaching European integration and provides knowledge in related issues within political sciences and law dimensions.
There are several practical objectives of the Chair:
- to promote and support teaching and research in areas relevant to Europe and Latvia's place in future Europe;
- to encourage the adoption of new interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge and up-to-date skills;
- to promote the use of new teaching methods, on-line courses to develop students' abilities to acquire, critically evaluate and use the acquired knowledge;
- to secure a high quality study process by inviting for round table discussion, seminars and conferences guest lecturers from overseas higher educational establishments;
- to develop practical knowledge by utilising specialists and experts from Latvian and EU institutions for discussions at public events;
- to secure and develop a high quality environment from learning and research by round table discussions, seminars and conferences and to establish necessary material base for the running study courses;
- to secure the development of an analytical skills and specialist knowledge of graduates programmes students and specialist knowledge secured by the Chair especially in areas where profound knowledge of contemporary European Union matters and possible solutions in cooperation with specialists from other European countries are an indispensable prerequisite.
